Three Frow: A deep, tactical basketball RPG

I asked OpenAI’s GPT-3 to generate 31 different videogame ideas, one for each day of Blaugust, each dealing in some way with that particular day of the month. Here’s its idea for August 3rd: “Three Frow”.

In this tactical strategy sports game, you must recruit and play the best basketball players from around the world in order to win the NBA championship. Cheering crowds will be your constant companion on your rise to the top. These aren’t your ordinary crowds, though — if you make a bad play, expect the fans to boo you mercilessly, or even throw things at you. Make a great play or a stunning assist, though, and the fans may just carry you off the court on their shoulders.

Each game plays out like a tactical strategy RPG, with each player having unique stats and abilities that must be used wisely in order to win. The two forwards play similarly to front line fighters in other games, while the center is more like a tank, and the point guard is the team’s mage. The game features a deep roster of characters to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You’ll need to carefully consider your team’s composition before each game, as well as which players to put on the court at which time, in order to give yourself the best chance of winning.

The opposing teams have their own bag of tricks. You might face such bizarre plays as a team of all centers, or a team that only shoots three-pointers. You’ll need to be prepared for anything if you want to win the championship. Even the basketball has a mind of its own, and it might just decide to bounce off the rim and out of bounds when you’re counting on it to go in.

“Three Frow!” is a challenging and addictive game that will keep you coming back for more. With its unique take on basketball, and its deep roster of characters, it’s a game that has something for everyone. So round up your friends, hit the court, and see if you have what it takes, to be the best.

Basketballing!

Your starting team is basic, but capable, consisting of:

  • A center, who is tall and strong, but not very fast.
  • A power forward, who is strong and fast, but not very tall.
  • A small forward, who is fast and tall, but not very strong.
  • A point guard, who is quick and has a good jump shot, but is not very strong or tall.

The game’s positions have a rock-paper-scissors-like power and weakness ranking. For instance, power forwards do well against centers, but struggle against small forwards. Small forwards do well against power forwards, but centers can block their shots and prevent them from driving to the basket. Centers do well against small forwards, but power forwards can outmuscle them and get easy baskets. Point guards have an advantage over centers, as they can shoot over them, but they struggle against power forwards and centers can block their shots.

Magic also has an important role to play in the game, with each position having a particular magical power. Centers, for instance, can shoot fireballs, while power forwards can shoot lightning bolts. Small forwards can shoot healing beams, and point guards can shoot speed bursts. These powers can be used to score baskets, or to help your team mates.

The game is played on a standard basketball court, with two hoops at either end. The objective is to score more points than the other team by shooting the ball through the hoop. The game is split into four quarters, with each quarter lasting ten minutes. At the start of each quarter, both teams line up at half court. The team with the ball starts with a player at each end of the court, and the other team has one player in the middle. As the quarter progresses, more players can enter the court, until both teams have five players on each side.

Players can move around the court freely, but they must stay within their own half. The ball can be passed between players, or dribbled along the ground. Players can shoot from anywhere on the court, but they will score more points if they are closer to the basket. The game ends when one team has more points than the other at the end of the fourth quarter. If the scores are tied at full time, then there will be overtime periods until one team emerges victorious.

So what makes Three Frow different from other strategy tactics RPGs? The unique setting, the focus on basketball, and the deep roster of characters are just some of the things that make Three Frow stand out from the crowd. If you’re looking for a challenging and addictive game that will keep you coming back for more, then Three Frow is the game for you.

One of my favorite results. GPT-3 just completely rewrites the rules of basketball toward the end. After this, most of my art came from Dall-E 2. But sometimes, Craiyon still wins a spot.

  1. This sounds like a ridiculously funny game to play with a group of friends. It probably helps if the players don’t actually know much about basketball. I really like that you are letting an AI create these descriptions, in part because some of what it comes up with is amusing!
