Mewtwo is coming to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in a 7 star Tera raid. I’ve had exactly zero luck winning any 7 star raids so far. This time, I plan to be prepared.
Mewtwo and I last met on the bloody parking lot of Charter Oak Park. He was the prize in a Shadow raid in Pokemon GO!, and I was determined to have him. I had a master ball all warmed up and ready. I found some locals who were willing to give it a shot in the Pokemon GO CT Discord. We gathered and we slayed and I got almost banned from Campfire for saying something innocuous. Lots of people did.
Mewtwo wasn’t particularly special, but I lobbed my master ball at him and caught him. Yay! Then we did it again. Mewtwo this time was shiny and near perfect, and me without a master ball. Didn’t need one, though — in Pokemon GO, if you encounter a shiny from a raid, it is an automatic catch.
I stopped playing very much after that. I still played the other Pokemon games, but Niantic was getting just a little greedy with their mobile app, and I felt I could get all the Pokemon fun I needed in Shield, Violet and Arceus. And I did.
They’re giving away a free Mew for the next couple of weeks in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. They are doing that to give people enough time to train it up so that it can take on Mewtwo, who invades in a 7 star raid on the first of September.
Nobody knows exactly what he will be like, what attacks he’ll use, or which Pokemon will be best to take him on. Given the new Mew, though, everyone is betting that Mew will be key to the raid.
The webs are already theory crafting it. We know that Mew will need maxed out Special Attack and Special Defense, as Mewtwo is a Psychic attacker.
As can be seen above, I have a long way to go here. I used up all the Calciums and Genius Feathers I had, and have been killing Psyducks for some boosts, but it’s clear there needs to be some grinding done. Six star raids give out bottle caps that can be turned in for some turbo charged EV raising, but I have not had a lot of luck with those.
The theory here is that Mew opens with Light Screen to blunt Mewtwo’s attacks. As a Psychic Pokemon with a Dark Tera type, Mew will be highly resistant to Mewtwo’s STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) attacks. We expect that Mewtwo will have moves to exploit Mew’s weaknesses.
Acid Spray lowers Mewtwo’s resistance to special damage, and Nasty Plot raises Mew’s Special Attack, while Snarl lowers Mewtwo’s Special Attack.
If Mew can last long enough to become Terrastized, it will become immune to most of what Mewtwo is likely to throw at it.
So the plan for the next few weeks is just to work on the Special Attack and Special Defense. It’s not world shaking to get Mewtwo, but I think it would be fun.
I will likely start looking at support build options, as well. Everybody there will be fielding a Mew. Most of them will be subbing a damage role. It might be worthwhile for me to bring a healer to keep everyone going. Stick with the Light Shield, add a heal, keep the two debuffs. We’ll see.
