Malifaux: A Close Race

Yeah, all that happened. I didn’t sleep last night. I’m kinda numb now, but I expect I’ll be trying to figure out what I can do and what I can help others do.

Anyway: It wasn’t a great night for miniatures gaming at the game shop. Kasul and I showed up, with only the inimitable Austin to fill out the crew. I’d been excited about bringing my new Arcane Emissary model to the board, so Kasul opted to paint some models while Mei Feng, Foreman (keyword: FOUNDRY) fought the management, Anya Lycarayen, Rail Magnate (keyword: SYNDICATE). Austin wanted to try out his Intrepid Emissary model as well, so it was workers vs management, emissary vs emissary in a battle to… vote.

Strategy: Stuff the Ballots

The goal here is to put more of your ballots into a box the ballots someone else put in. Ballot boxes on your half of the board don’t count for you.

Deployment: Wedge — triangle shape on your side of the board.

Schemes: Death Beds and Deliver a Message. Death Beds is just about picking a model and having it interact with a henchman or leader. Deliver a Message is interacting with a leader. I picked my Arcane Emissary to do both. This was not a smart move.

So, Arcane Emissary is a beast. Austin had empowered a scheme marker that meant I could not target one of his models with an action unless I discarded a card. Not a problem with the A.E. I had an AE that hit everything within a decent radius without explicitly targeting anything. Then I hit a trigger that did it again. And it pushed things away. Plus, A.E. gets an extra special charge attack, and if Mei Feng gives him Fast, he can do it three times. I didn’t have the Diesel Engine upgrade, but that does even more and will have it next time.

I sent Porkchop off to run the strategy along with the Soulstone Miners while A.E. tried to finagle his way into battle with Anya or her henchman, Corvid. But I just couldn’t. The space between the ballot box we were fighting over and a piece of terrain was smaller than 50mm, and I wasn’t able to get my rail worker close enough to toss him over the barriers.

And so I did not score any schemes. We just played three rounds because everyone wanted to get home and become depressed, so I only scored two points for ballots, while Austin got four or five, as he had no problem completing his schemes.

I really need to play a video game or something.
