Frosthaven #114: Work Freeze

Those silly tinkerers with their silly little… tinkered things. We’re looking for a way through the Copperneck Mountains so that we can explore the ancient ruins said to lie beyond them, and we were excited when a tinkerer hired us to clear a couple of local wildlife from a pass they wanted to make through the mountains.

Why sure! We love killing bunnies and foxes and squirrels and d’uhhhhh they’re so cute! How could we kill such wittle wuverly wubwubs?

“What are you talking about?”, asked the tinkerer, confused. “Wolves, dears. And bears. And worse.”

Sorry, Raspy

The scenario had us destroying eight ice pillars. Explosives were available if we wanted, but we weren’t going to be forced to use them if we didn’t want to. But if we did, they could be picked up, as many as we wanted as long as it was one at a time per person and at the cost of discarding a card, and placed even while moving. The whole scenario made it clear that you were intended to use the explosives; they would one-hit all the snow imps and wolves, and do significant damage to the polar bears.

Even better, when they exploded, they did damage to all the hexes around them. They were dangerous; moving into a hex with an explosive detonated it, as did getting hit while carrying one.

Our group, for now, is still Banner Spear, Deathwalker, Boneshaper and Blinkblade. I’m the Banner Spear, and I’ve specialized as a support class, keeping folks healthy and buffed. I tried the tank role, but it seems everyone else has so much mobility that there’s no way I can keep up.

Bears and imps spawn throughout the scenario. Breaking the four ice pillars in the first room opens the doors to the second, upon which the adds spawning in the first room now start spawning in the second.

My scenario goal was Peacemaker. I was not to kill any creatures in the scenario.

As I ran out, placed an explosive, then dragged it in to a hex with a couple wolves, an imp and a crystal in the area, I asked aloud if having an explosion kill things counts as me killing things? If I placed a bomb, and walked away, and at some indeterminate time in the future a monster walks in and gets blowed up… was that me?

Apparently, yes, it was me. So much for that scenario goal.

Second turn, I’d killed a crystal and three mobs. In another turn, I’d used my level 3 loss card to set up an AE — along with a handy poison vial to add to the damage — that shredded a polar bear in one hit. I took potshots throughout the scenario, but mostly after that I was moving banners around and healing people.

The Deathwalker did her odd/even turn rotation of setting up shadows and then using them to devastating effect.

First room, we’re just getting started

Blinkblade did Blinkblade things — large mobility and devastating attacks; ended up tanking a lot of the time, too. Boneshaper summoned more minions and skelly boys than I’d ever seen him do before. He donned a Kevlar robe and walked right into the middle of a group of imps and wolves and a crystal, and blowed up when someone attacked him. But his Kevlar vest let him take no damage from one attack.

Deathwalker and Blinkblade took out the remaining crystals in the second room while I kept healing and kept playing any card I could play to get me more experience.

I ended the scenario just 14xp from retirement, so it was a good time. We had fun, nobody was near exhaustion. Given we’re all still in the starting classes, I think we’re finding the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It will be fun to see how the dynamic shifts once characters do begin to retire.

Not super soon; this scenario, which was intended to lead to those ancient ruins, won’t continue with the second part for four weeks. We don’t have any more sledding, climbing or boating scenarios unlocked, we’re still many buildings away from retiring the character who depends upon outpost development. It’s just the Banner Spear in one or two scenarios. I was hoping to have more choices for unlocks. Right now, it’s either one of the other two starting classes (Drifter or Geminate), or Fist or Coral. I’m leaning toward Coral, but I would like more choices.

That’s all from the world of Frosthaven this time. I think we decided to continue along in the Algox arc for next time — should be fun. Usually is!
