With the rogue gaining a shield and the dwarf a bunch of armor and a battleaxe, we’re finding ourselves on the far side of the power curve.
Our Mentor sent us on a mission to find a secret passage leading to a mountain, a secret passage found only within the ruins of the dwarven fortress built by Forgrin, the Fire King.
Sir Ragnar has taken the book we found in the previous quest and plans to deliver to Prince Magnus, personally. Now, it’s my suspicion that the Sir Ragnar we are now dealing with is not the same Sir Ragnar we rescued all that time ago. I think we’re dealing with an imposter or someone struggling under a curse, and I don’t think he is to be trusted.
I believe Mentor shares this suspicion, and so we’re looking for this secret passage in order to get ahead of the compromised knight and protect the prince.
It seemed unusual that we started in the normal stairs for this quest, since the previous ones have seen us start scattered, or entirely outside the game board. But this time, we just were heading down the stairs.
I, as the Elf, proposed to be the one in charge of searching for treasure and looting chests. The others, I thought, could fight off any wandering monsters, and when they weren’t available, clear rooms of monsters so that I could search for treasure in peace.
I figured I could make tidy bank on this, and my stupid, mortal companions would —
Oh. The rogue. Is also an elf. And greed and the love of gold runs deep in his blood, too. I hate rivals.
There were very few traps in this dungeon. Some of the rooms were a little crowded, but with both the Barbarian and the Dwarf well-set up for tanking, the Rogue, wielding the Orcbane sword, stabbing, and my Elf standing well away from the pain plinking with the crossbow, nothing really challenged us. I barely remember the battle against the Witch Queen herself; she summoned some mistwalking undead and then, basically, peaced out.
I and Kasul, who was playing Zargon (AKA the DM for the campaign), talked afterward about maybe beefing up the danger for the next quest. I don’t want to lose, nobody want that. But, nobody even used a healing potion last night. I didn’t use my healing spell. Nobody really was ever in any danger.
So, next time… maybe we’ll see a bit more resistance. Maybe we’ll find out the truth about whatever it is that wears Sir Ragnar’s face. Who knows?
