10 Million B.C.: An open-world action RPG set in the time of the dinosaurs

I asked OpenAI’s GPT-3 to generate 31 different videogame ideas, one for each day of Blaugust, each dealing in some way with that particular day of the month. Here’s its idea for August 10th: “10 Million B.C.”.

Number: 10. Genre: Open-world action RPG. Title: “10 Million B.C.” Outline: In this open-world action RPG set in the time of the dinosaurs, you play as a young hunter who must survive in a hostile world filled with giant beasts. Tame dinosaurs and use them to help you travel across the vast landscape and discover lost civilizations.

You’ll be able to tame dinosaurs from stegosaurus to the T-Rex. You can use them for transportation, as well as for combat situations. There will be a day and night cycle, with different dinosaurs being more active at different times.

The game will also feature lost civilizations, which you can explore to uncover clues about the history of the world. Your tribe, the “Nasute”, are one of the many that wander the lands. They are a nomadic people, moving from place to place in search of food and shelter.

The world is a dangerous place, filled with giant beasts that can kill you. You must learn to survive in this hostile environment, and find ways to protect your tribe from the dangers that lurk around every corner. Luckily for you, your tribe is home to some of the greatest hunters in the land. They will teach you everything you need to know about hunting and survival.

The art style will be inspired by the paintings of the time period.

Not actual game graphics

Your journey starts in the Valley of the Nasute, where your tribe has just set up camp. It is here that you will be given your first taste of the hunt. Go out into the valley and track down some food for your tribe. Be careful though, as there are many dangers lurking in the valley.

After you have completed your first hunt, you will be ready to venture out into the world and start your adventure. The elders of the tribe reveal to you that there are other tribes like yours, spread out across the land. They tell you of a great gathering that takes place every few years, where all of the different tribes come together to trade goods and information. The next gathering is only a few weeks away, and your tribe has been invited.

This is your opportunity to explore the world beyond the Valley of the Nasute. Your tribe packs up their belongings and sets off on the journey to the gathering. Along the way, you will encounter many different tribes, each with their own customs and traditions. You will also come across hostile tribes that may try to attack you.

Be prepared for anything as you travel across the vast landscape in search of adventure. Tame a velociraptor, and you’ll be able to travel the land at great speeds. For air travel, you can use a pterodactyl. Need to travel to ruins beneath the waves? Use a mosasaur. The possibilities are endless as you explore the world of 10 Million B.C.

Don’t ‘@’ me. I know dinosaurs and humans didn’t co-exist. Tell it to the AI. The AI also originally named this 10,000 B.C., but it looks like there’s at least one game and a movie with this title, so I switched it to 10 Million B.C., a time when neither dinosaurs nor humans were around. At least, now, they’re on equal footing.

  1. It’s interesting the AI wants to have humans and dinosaurs co-existing and specifically refers to “paintings of the time period”. I wonder where it’s drawing from? Presumably it’s pulling its learning data primarily from other games and entertainment sources, due to the nature of the tasks it’s being set. I’d hate to think its choices represent an average of the full data set it has access to, which is presumably the entire publicly-available worldwide web.

    • It lost its train of thought and pretty early on decided to forget the dinosaurs and make it a tribe vs tribe thing. I added a dinosaur prompt to get it on message and it finished the rest acceptably.

Yeah, I thought the “paintings of the time period” for graphics were funny enough that I had to pull that quote out. Like, where did that even come from? I don’t think people really want gameplay graphics to be quite THAT abstract. At best, cutscenes.
