Sometimes, at the retro game store, I see a game that just raises so many questions. Like, why? That’s a really common question. A question you can’t really ask when the Muppets are involved. The stupider, the sillier, the better.
So, a James Bond parody with Kermit as Agent Frog and Miss Piggy as the sultry Piggy Galore? I am just not going to read any reviews of the game and just go in cold. Like spies. Who come in from the cold sometimes.
Three supervillains have escaped custody and are plotting for world domination. “Mr. Nose” Gonzo plans to make the entire world smooth as an egg and safe for he and his poultry harem. “King” Prawn’s League of Lobsters are up to something fishy. And Piggy Galore’s henchpigs are stealing all the groceries for themselves.
Each stage starts with Kermit trying to fix the vehicle he’s going to need to chase down the bad guys. Dr Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker are supposed to have all this ready for him, but they seem to be working on something else.
The pattern matching game is a clue as to what the game really is — a collection of simple minigames.
That’s the real question I could have asked, before I bought. What kind of game is it? Stealth based shooter a la Siphon Filter? A beat-em-up? First person shooter like GoldenEye? Tactical RPG?
No, it’s a collection of minigames. There’s only a few — the pattern matching game, a couple variants of pressing buttons to make lights light game, a vehicle stage dodging obstacles, a launch the object game and I think that’s them.
The games can be tricky at higher difficulty levels, but the controls are clunky and laggy and there really is no reason to make it more difficult. There’s really no reason to play, actually. There is a hidden secret boss fight once you defeat the three minibosses, but there’s no new gameplay for it.
If you really, really love The Muppets, this game will easily give you an hour of fun before you finish it. If you don’t, well, it’ll be an hour of your life that you will never get back. I can’t really recommend hunting this down unless you’re a Muppets completionist.
Here’s some video. It’s in German because I wanted to practice my reading.
