EverQuest Legends allows you to create a dungeon without respawns, but why would you ever want that?
I mean, it’s right there in the name of it — No. Respawns.
The iconic EQ experience is sitting in a room in a dungeon somewhere while the dedicated puller runs around and tries to find mobs to bring back to the group. Someone in the group has a timer so they know when they room they are in repops so everyone can be ready. If this works out, everyone gets experience and loot. What usually happened, in classic EQ, was that multiple groups would be trying for the same mobs, and so most dungeons were absolutely safer than walking through Rivervale during Oktoberfest.
Well, I guess most things are safer than that. But you get the point.
When you’re soloing the whole dungeon, you don’t get to sit in one place and have someone bring the xp to you. You have to go find it yourself. What usually happens to me is that I find a group of mobs that I can kill and just as I kill the last one, the first one repops. And I just keep doing that until I get bored or ding or something.
But since I am playing an Enchanter (among other classes) in EverQuest Legends, I’m saddled with a charmed pet. My charmed pet is waiting for me to have to rebuff, at which point it will break charm and pummel me. And then other repops join in, and I don’t have my battle spells up, and it’s the end of the run.
I Had This Idea The Other Night. I would return to Splitpaw and make my own instance, a non-respawning instance. I would go in there and kill everything I saw; explore the whole place. And when I wanted to rebuff, I could just take a few steps back, kill my pet and rebuff and nothing was going to attack me from behind.
Sure, I wasn’t going to be farming much loot for merging, but I’d get a chance at everything. If I found something I liked, I could go back, no problem.
It was relaxing. It was fun. It felt like a real dungeon crawl. I killed all the bosses, including The Ishva Mal. Got some decent loot. Leveled. Got some AAs. It was just a pleasant, casual experience.
I kinda want to do that all the time, now. I did go to Sol B tonight and did Champ/Priest/King for awhile until I dinged 40, but there will come a time when I want to hit the fire giants and the Efreeti and I don’t want to worry about repops. That’ll be my chance to choose a no-respawn instance again.
I needed to make 9 AA to get Ambidexterity, which increases your chance to dual wield by 32%. The suggested trick is to choose a new combo and use your presumably powered up gear to completely smash a low level dungeon. That’s exactly what I did. I changed to WAR/DRU/BRD, figured out the whole Symphonic Aura thing, spent some AAs to get three spells constantly going, and headed to Befallen. I went in at level 10. I left at, I think, level 18, having killed everything in there except the Baron room and the Rogue corridor next to it.
My usual WAR/CLR/ENC strategy is to AE stun and mez things and kill things one at a time. Boring and slow. For WAR/DRU/BRD, I’d gather 4-5 mobs, put on two druid damage shields and the bard AE damage song, tank and occasionally heal. Sometimes I’d have to heal a lot, but I didn’t die the whole night. Not even when I fell down that one trap into the Gynok Moltor room and he came and brought friends.
Anyway I had other things to write about, but it’s getting late and I needed to write a Blaugust compliance post, so here it is 🙂
