EverQuest Legends: Dragons, dead ones

I absolutely 100% want to write about other things than EverQuest Legends. But when midnight rolls around and I have been playing EQL all evening, well, I guess I just have to write about it.

Ubertank Ibeogur, seeing Kanad and I were now level 40, asked if we, perchance, bore any grudge against the parents of Kerafrym the Sleeper (in another reality) hat could possibly be alleviated by their unforesoon and untimely demise?

Well, we offered, perhaps.

Nagafen was first on the list.

My first time doing the dragons, my guild United Norrath Coalition collaborated with Legion of Fate on the beatdown. Everyone had to have four instaclicks, and those had to be the first buffs, as Naggy would wipe out the first four buffs at times. Next, we had to have fire resistance on as much of our gear as we could. There was a fire resist suit that dropped somewhere, I think Sol A, that we were encouraged to get, as well as FR jewelry. The idea was to pull Naggy and his room to the stairs, and hide around the corner to dodge his AE as much as possible, peeking out to cast spells. I was a druid at the time. I don’t know how useful I was.

Since buffs took so long to cast, everyone had to hit their clickies, get buffed, and log out immediately. We’d all wait in chat (EQ had out-of-game chat back then) and then when the buffs were done and the clerics and enchanters back to full mana, they’d call us in, we’d get in our groups and go. The pullers would already have gotten all the giants out of the dragon room, so all we would have is the dragon left over.

I don’t know if we bound outside the lair for Naggy, but we definitely did for Vox. The idea was that if you died, you’d grab your corpse (rogues would be dragging corpses out), click your clickies, and run back in. You’d get the best rez possible, but it would be good if you weren’t too close to your level at the time. Lots of people lost levels in raids.

Tanking Naggy

Very different in EQL. The dragons don’t strip your buffs anymore. Promised Renewal makes complete heal rotations pointless (CH doesn’t even exist in EQL). Everyone gets their own loot. Not sure if I ever got any loot from Naggy or Vox back in the day. Lots of guilds were trying to kill the dragons; us low level guilds had to wait until the uberguilds had moved on to the planes before they’d start leaving us the dragons. And there were so many third and fourth tier guilds that needed them.

First tier guilds killed gods. Second tier guilds farmed the planes for armor. Third tier guilds just focused on getting ready for the dragons. You’d think with so few raids available in the first year of EverQuest that most guilds would be starved for content, but actually, it took so long to level that most players weren’t max level before Kunark. I wasn’t. I hit 50 in a Lake of Ill Omen group soon after Kunark opened. I hit 60 quad-kiting Spirocs in Timorous Deep. Kunark had faster experience; it made people understand xp could come fast.

In EQL, you can solo everything. Being in a group summons more adds and makes the dragon a lot meatier. It was lucky that both Ibeogur and I were enchanters, so we could bring charmed pets in.

We did Naggy twice (D0 and D1), Vox twice (D0 and D1) and Master Yael twice (D0 and D1). We got three of the jewel that ranks up any spell or piece of gear by one; I used two of them to level up my Blackened Alloy Bastard Sword a couple more levels, and used the last one for the Cloak of Flames that dropped off Naggy. A bunch of loot dropped. And I didn’t have to share any of it (but of course I would have if it were needed by anyone).

So now we have killed the dragons and can try it as a duo or solo. Next is to get to 46 and start exploring the planes. And after that? Farm?

Next post will not be about EverQuest Legends. I promise.
